Composer Series: César Franck

Join us as we enjoy chamber music by composer César Franck, performed by members of the St. Louis Symphony. This concert will feature selections from Franck’s beloved Sonata for Violin and Piano, and will highlight his emotionally explosive Piano Quintet, which is largely considered one of his crowning compositional achievements. César Franck was one of the leading composers, pianists and organists of the second half of the 19th Century. Though born in Belgium, he was educated at the Paris Conservatory and made his entire career in Paris, France. Franck was instrumental in the movement to give French music emotional engagement, technical solidity, and seriousness—comparable to that of German composers—shifting the focus away from opera and towards symphonic & chamber music.
