Emily Trask, one of the CCSCSL’s newest Chess Associate’s, took a few moments to highlight the Club’s chess camp, one of several exciting summer programs. Be sure to check out the Club’s website for information on registration, as well as information on other programs and events taking place this summer!
Widely seen as the premier chess facility in the country and one of the best in the world, the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis offers a variety of programs for mastering the game of chess. One of the most exciting aspects of the CCSCSL is the events we host throughout the year. Most of the events are tournaments and lessons, but our summer camp is certainly one of our most popular programs. Each summer we host three camp sessions for children ranging from ages 6 through 18. Instructors and campers achieve as much as possible in the week-long camp, beginning with the basics. The week starts by teaching campers the core elements of the game in order to establish a solid foundation. Daily puzzles and regular free play teach the fundamental skills of chess, which increase critical thinking. This attribute sticks with players throughout their lives. Grandmasters including Melikset Khachiyan, along with certified chess associates, lead campers. This ensures that anyone who attends the camp will learn from the best of the best.
The CCSCSL camps do not focus solely on beginners. This year we have added a new feature for intermediate players, which focuses on advanced concepts like tactics, strategy, middlegame planning, and endgame technique. Part of this new option is aimed at aspiring chess masters. In this advanced program, we emphasize tournament and competitive play. This makes our camp ideal for beginners as well as more advanced players, who are looking to grow and work towards the ultimate title of grandmaster.
No matter what rank or age the camper is they will be taught the fundamental skills and critical thinking innate to the game. Most importantly the camps are filled with energy and are a great way to have fun and escape the Saint Louis heat. Be sure to register in advance for our next session, which will take place August 3-7, 2015.
