This event is SOLD OUT. You may still reserve your place on our wait list through the registration below, or call (314)367.9243 ext. 0.

Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), was one of the major composers of the 20th century. Achieving fame during the height of the Soviet Union, he was at various points championed and persecuted by the government as they imposed strict standards for Soviet art. Shostakovich’s music reflects this emotional roller coaster, at times full of humor, wit, and
nationalism, while at others portraying defiance and bleak resignation. This concert will feature Russian pianist, Alla Voskoboynikova, and members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in a program of chamber music for piano and strings, most notably Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57. An immediate success, the work won the Stalin Prize and was frequently performed by Russian string quartets, often with the composer at the piano.

Performed by members of the St. Louis Symphony: Alla Voskoboynikova, piano; Xiaoxiao Qiang & Hyorin Han, violins; Chris Tantillo, viola; Yin Xiong, cello.
