Join us for an electrifying evening of Classical music as the WCHOF Music Series celebrates the profound artistry of the violin-piano duo. The performance takes place at the World Chess Hall of Fame & Galleries, a unique Saint Louis museum and art gallery, offering an unforgettable atmosphere where strategic games meet sonic masterpieces.

The Program: An Evening of Brilliant Duos

Experience a journey through the breathtaking interplay of violin and piano with this program of Romantic-era masterworks:

  • Franz Schubert’s Rondo in B Minor, D 895: A dazzling tour de force for both violin and piano, filled with obsessive virtuosity and vibrant energy.
  • Robert Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 2, Op. 121: A work renowned for its profound emotional weight and intimate lyricism, capturing the intense spirit of the Romantic era.

The Performers: Collaborative Excellence

This exceptional evening features Music Director Brian Woods and award-winning Canadian violinist Daniel Dastoor.

WCHOF Music Director Brian Woods has curated this exceptional program, selecting pieces that reflect the WCHOF’s mission to celebrate the intersection of art, culture, and the high strategy of chess. Daniel Dastoor is an award-winning soloist and chamber musician who, as the top-ranked winner of the prestigious Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank Competition, performs on the rare and historic 1700 Taft Stradivari violin. Together, the duo will bring a vibrant and deep emotionality to these cornerstone works, building on their history as longtime collaborators.

Thematic Connection: Strategy in Sound

The musical architecture of the violin-piano sonata is a masterclass in collaboration and counter-strategy. Like a game of chess, the performers must anticipate and respond to one another, using the individual ‘voices’ of the instruments to build a unified, emotional narrative. Schubert and Schumann’s duos require a strategic, shared vision to navigate their complex movements, making this concert a perfect fit for a venue dedicated to the high strategy of chess and art.
