Biography
Vasyl Ivanchuk, though never a world champion, is a legendary figure in chess for his principled, uncompromising play. Ivanchuk first attracted attention when he won the 1988 New York Open and entered the world top ten, a position he occupied from 1988 to 2002. Rated number two in the world on three separate occasions (July 1991, July 1992, and October 2007), Ivanchuk came closest to becoming World Champion in 2002 when he was defeated in the final by fellow Ukrainian Ruslan Ponomariov. Ivanchuk has won many important tournaments, including the prestigious Linares event on multiple occasions. He has shone particularly brightly at the Chess Olympiads, leading Ukraine to gold in 2004 and 2010.
