Curator Tour: “Keith Haring: Radiant Gambit” and “Masterminds: Chess Prodigies”

Enjoy a free, in-person tour of our limited-time exhibitions, Keith Haring: Radiant Gambit and Masterminds: Chess Prodigiesled by a member of our curatorial team. Each tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and tickets are extremely limited. Masks and social distancing will be required.

Keith Haring: Radiant Gambit features artwork by Haring, a world-renowned artist known for his art that proliferated in the New York subway system during the early 1980s. The exhibition includes a never-before-seen private collection of Haring’s works and photographs of the artist, bespoke street art chess sets from Purling London and newly-commissioned pieces by Saint Louis artists, all paying homage to the late art icon. On view through May 16, 2021.

Masterminds: Chess Prodigies is an exhibition that tells the stories of notable chess prodigies including Bobby Fischer, World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and the Polgar sisters. Through photographs, videos and mementos of important chess matches and tournaments from the collection of the World Chess Hall of Fame, visitors will learn more about these talented young players as well as their later accomplishments. The exhibition will also highlight the achievements of players who took up the game later in life and still made a mark on the world of chess. On view through November 7, 2021.

T. S. Eliot: A Game of Chess explores Eliot’s famous poem, The Waste Land, through the theme of chess. After World War I, the Spanish Flu, and his father’s death, Eliot wrote The Waste Land, a poem expressing grief and feelings of alienation in a rapidly modernizing society. Situated just steps from his parent’s home in Saint Louis’ Central West End, this exhibit features artifacts and multimedia displays relating to Eliot’s poem, his chess metaphors, and the many strands of his life that he wove into his writing.

Sound Moves: Where Music Meets Chess explores the diversity of intersections shared by two of the world’s most universally beloved endeavors, the art and sport of chess and the production, performance, and experience of music. The exhibition features albums, videos, photographs and instruments from some of history’s most famous chess players and musicians, including Katy Perry, the Kid LAROI, RZA and GZA, Garry Kasparov, A.D. Philidor, Arnold Schoenberg, John Cage, Chuck Berry, Sting, Patti Smith, Julian Casablancas, the White Stripes, Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie among others.

Match of the Matriarchs: Ladies’ Knight Lesson & Curator Tour

Join us for a special edition of the Saint Louis Chess Club’s “Ladies’ Knight” program, hosted here at the World Chess Hall of Fame, inside our newest gallery exhibition, Donna Dodson: Match of the Matriarchs and Other Amazonmachies! WCHOF Chief Curator Shannon Bailey will speak about the exhibition, and WGM Thalia Cervantes will lead a lesson using the life-sized pieces from Dodson’s “Match of the Matriarchs” chess set, the only set of its kind depicting all women pieces. This program is for women and girls of all ages, open to all skill levels, and complimentary for STLCC and WCHOF members. Bring some friends, enjoy complimentary refreshments, and have fun exploring the art of chess!

WCHOF Curator Tours: Match of the Matriarchs & Clash for the Crown

Attend a complimentary tour led by the curators of the newest WCHOF exhibitions, Donna Dodson: Match of the Matriarchs and Other Amazonomachies, and Clash for the Crown: Celebrating Chess Champions. Enjoy refreshments and Q&A as we explore chess through the lens of woodworking, competitive tournaments, art, culture, and history!

Donna Dodson: Match of the Matriarchs and other Amazonomachies is the first solo exhibition by a female artist hosted by the World Chess Hall of Fame. The show centers on women’s stories, women’s lives, and their place in the history of chess and includes Dodson’s monumental, life-sized chess set Match of the Matriarchs, which contains 32 large-scale wooden sculptures representing all-female representations of cephalopods battling cetaceans.

Clash for the Crown: Celebrating Chess Champions explores the histories of the World Chess Championship and Women’s World Chess Championship through a display of artifacts from the collection of the World Chess Hall of Fame, the International Chess Federation (FIDE), and loans from world chess champions and private lenders. This exhibition coincides with the 100th anniversary of FIDE’s founding and includes never-before-exhibited artifacts related to many of the game’s most accomplished players.
