Meet local artist Justin King and make animal hand puppets and decorative masks out of cardboard! With artwork featured in Paws and Pawns: Exploring Animal Chess Sets, Justin will dive into his artistic process and demonstrate how to make your art! Complimentary and fun for all ages! St Louis-based multidisciplinary artist, Justin King is mainly known for his cardboard sculptures. His work blends his love of natural history with whimsical punches of color. Often using underutilized and sustainable materials, he lives and works out of his home in the historic Tower Grove neighborhood. King’s pieces are frequently available through the Houska Gallery.
Create and customize a journal to take home, and learn about journaling prompts with friends! Inspired by our exhibition, Reading Between the Lines: Chess and Literature, this fun workshop is complimented with provided supplies and complimentary refreshments by Brennan’s.

Enjoy a complimentary tour of Crown Jewels: Donation Highlights and Paws and Pawns: Exploring Animal Chess Sets with Artist Sophie Binder! Sophie will discuss her intricately designed chessboard featured in Paws & Pawns, her experiences as an illustrator, and her “field study” project. Refreshments are provided.
Sophie Binder is a freelance designer native of France. She has worked as a designer in France, Italy, and the United States for over 30 years, including projects worldwide. Sophie’s work has also brought her close to conservation, not-for-profit organizations, and the outdoor industry. She self-published a book about her adventure in 2013, The World, Two Wheels and a Sketchbook, and has done illustrations for four other books for French publisher PRIVAT.

Join us for an evening of drawing inspired by the exhibition PINNED! A Designer Chess Challenge and Saint Louis fashion history. Artist Juan William Chávez is back by popular demand, this time with a focus on contour drawings. We’ll start with some quick drawing exercises in the gallery, and then explore shape, color, and pattern as we draw from a shoe still life in the studio. Juan William Chávez is an artist and cultural activist. He is the founder and director of Northside Workshop, a non-profit art space dedicated to addressing cultural and community issues in North Saint Louis. Chávez also teaches Conceptual Drawing, Digital Drawing, and Artists Working in the Public Realm courses at Webster University.

Join us for a complimentary lecture as part of Clash for the Crown: Celebrating Chess Champions by renowned chess historian IM John Donaldson. Listen as he tells little-known stories behind artifacts related to legendary world chess champions and women’s world chess champions.
IM John Donaldson joined the Tacoma Chess Club in the fall of 1972, inspired by the Fischer-Spassky match. An international master, with two grandmaster norms, Donaldson has captained the U.S. Chess Olympiad team on 14 occasions. He is the author of over 40 books on chess, including Bobby Fischer and His World.
