A new venture by pianist Phil Dunlap, the St. Louis Hot Sevens is an all-star group of Saint Louis musicians assembled to pay homage to Louis Armstrong and his venerable groups, the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens. Originally named after the number of musicians in each group, the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens made some of the greatest early jazz recordings, exemplifying the sound of hot jazz and solidifying Armstrong as a leader and jazz improviser. Working with transcriptions of original recordings from the mid to late 1920s, this group features some of Armstrong’s best-known compositions from this era, highlighting some of his greatest contributions to music. The St. Louis Hot Sevens features Adam Hucke (trumpet), Ben Reece (clarinet), Cody Henry (trombone), Lamar Harris (tuba), Phil Dunlap (piano), TJ Muller (banjo), and Kaleb Kirby (drums).
