On April 27th, The 442s began their eclectic set surrounded by a packed house at the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF). The 442s made their first appearance at the WCHOF in February 2014 when the Monthly Music Series officially launched. This was their third appearance at the WCHOF and, once again, they did not disappoint.
The 442s are an acoustic instrumental group that play a mix of jazz, classical, folk and rock music. Founded in 2012, The 442s are comprised of Shawn Weil on violin, Bjorn Ranheim on cello, Sydney Rodway on bass, and Adam Maness on guitar, accordion, melodica and glockenspiel. Adam Maness also writes all the original compositions for The 442s. By melding two members of the Erin Bode group and two members of the St. Louis Symphony, The 442s have created an innovative and impressive group. Each member brings their own unique sound, bursting with spirit and skill.
Simply put: they make you feel things. One song in particular, “The Caves and the Cold,” is a perfect example of the range of The 442s. Robust violin and cello riffs, coupled with voice parts, give you a sense of how truly multi-talented this group is. “The Caves and the Cold” contains classical elements with a modern feel that makes it interesting and new. It is a touching composition that pulls at your heartstrings. It’s authentic, expressive and creative.
The talent and skill of The 442s is abundant and undeniable. By combining new and traditional musical techniques, this charismatic group has created a style all their own.

The World Chess Hall of Fame’s Music Series takes place on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. In an intimate gallery setting, each month the WCHOF partners with a different musical guest to celebrate the vibrant musical talent Saint Louis has to offer.
